Game Introduction

Introduction

You were born into slavery. Some crime your ancestors committed in the distant pass has condemned you to a hopeless life as a slave. Your masters are humanoids - mostly orcs but also goblins, kobolds and bugbears among others. Freedom is only a dream. The humanoids are in absolute control.

To stay alive, you must eat a special food made from a root called Donva. Without donva, you will become sick and die within three days. The humanoids completely control the production of donva so escaping would only lead to a horrible death in three days time.

Your earliest memories are of working in the fields, picking crops, grinding grain and digging soil. When you were about 10 years old, you were taken from the fields and made into a house slave. This improved your lot in life significantly. While the humanoids in the house were no less cruel, the environment was cleaner and safer. Most humanoids like their slaves to be presentable, so the food and care was also much better.

A few years later, you were given as a present to an adolescent goblin, a younger sibling of a large wealthy family. You were now his personal slave. The goblin was being trained as an adventurer (something commonly done to younger, more troublesome offspring). You were there watching everything that went on. You secretly learned all that he knew, all along realizing that the goblin was a talentless idiot and that you could do much better as his chosen profession than he was doing. If not for the curse, you could take your skills and try your chance at escaping.

After a few years of training, the young humanoid is deemed ready for his first adventure. He is put into a group with other young graduates and together they are sent on their first mission – they must travel to a nearby cave and eradicate the monsters that live within it. Traveling to the cave, the players meet each other for the first time. They talk briefly during the few spare moments where they are not being order around. They quickly discover they all have a similar background and attitude about their masters.

The group is escorted to the area of the cave by a trio of bugbear rangers. The cave is in the back of a rocky canyon with only a narrow path allowing access to it. There is a well marked campsite a half mile from the cave. The party and their masters are left at the campsite with enough gear for them to camp with and enough food for three days. The rangers leave, taking all the horses and the rest of the supplies with them. The one thing they leave is Grunk. Grunk is an ogre allegedly charged with making sure that whatever lives in the cave stays in the cave. You suspect that his real job is to make sure no adventurers become deserters.

The adventurers enter the cave one evening leaving their slaves (aka, the players) behind at the campsite. Grunk is nearby, sleeping against a tree.
